Pattaya on $50 a Day: What That Actually Buys You
Short answer: $50 a day is a comfortable budget in Pattaya — not a scraping-by one. At roughly 35 baht to the dollar that is about 1,750 THB, which covers a clean private room, three good meals, drinks, transport and a massage, with change. Backpackers manage on half that. The one thing that breaks the budget is not food or hotels; it is a night in the beer bars, where a single evening can cost more than two days of everything else.

The room: 500 to 1,200 THB is the sweet spot
Pattaya has more hotel rooms than almost any Thai city outside Bangkok, and the competition shows in the price. Budget guesthouses run 500–1,000 THB a night. Mid-range hotels with a pool are 1,200–2,800 THB. Around 700 THB you get a clean, air-conditioned private double with decent wifi — which is why $50 a day works here and would not in most beach destinations.

Food: the part Pattaya is genuinely great at
A plate of pad krapow with a fried egg from a street stall is 50–120 THB. A proper sit-down Thai restaurant meal is 120–300 THB. A Western meal — burger, pizza, full English — jumps to 250–600 THB, and that single swap is the most common reason people overspend without noticing.
Coffee is the quiet outlier: 60–160 THB at a cafe, which is not far off Western prices. Two flat whites a day is a bigger line item than your transport.
The genuinely good value, though, is the buffets and food courts. Drinks: where budgets actually die
A large beer is 70–120 THB in an ordinary bar and 150–220 THB in the beachfront and Walking Street venues. From a 7-Eleven it is a fraction of either. Cocktails in a club run 180–500 THB and up.
None of that breaks $50 a day on its own. What does is a full night out in the bar complexes, which realistically runs 1,500–4,000 THB once drinks, bar games and rounds for other people are counted. That is one to two full days of budget in an evening. If nightlife is the point of your trip, budget it as a separate line rather than pretending it fits inside the daily number — that honest split is what keeps the rest of the trip on track.
Getting around costs almost nothing
The baht bus — the blue pickup truck with bench seats — is 10–20 THB a ride anywhere on the standard loops. Motorbike taxis are 40–120 THB. Bolt and Grab cars run 80–350 THB across town. Budget 100 THB a day and you will rarely exceed it.
Plenty of visitors rent a scooter instead for a few hundred baht a day. It is convenient and it is how most residents get around — but Pattaya traffic is genuinely dangerous, and most travel insurance will refuse a claim if you were riding without the right licence. Three things that quietly double the budget
- Eating Western. Two Western meals a day instead of Thai adds roughly 600–900 THB, which is half your budget again.
- Beachfront and Walking Street drink prices. The same beer costs double a hundred metres inland.
- Airport transfers booked on arrival. Negotiating a car at Suvarnabhumi at midnight costs far more than a fixed price booked in advance.
